Farewell to Flossie
Flossie,
the beloved hinny that lived at Andalusia for well over three
decades, died on June 11. She was a descendent of some of the
animals that lived on the farm when Flannery O'Connor was here.
Flossie was a cross between a male horse (stallion) and a female
donkey (jenny) -- a mixed breed of a horse and jenny, thus a hinny.
She was quite gentle and a little cautious, but she became
increasingly curious about the growing number of visitors that made
their way to her pasture fence to get a closer look. For
several years she was the subject for more professional
photographers than anything else at Andalusia, including the main
house. She has appeared on several websites, many Facebook
profiles, in Youtube videos, and on Flickr pages. Her image
has been included in numerous newspaper and magazine articles.
She was given world-wide attention in the three-page spread in the
New York Times on February 4, 2007 by Lawrence Downes.
Flossie
lived a long time and was provided very good care. She is
buried behind her pasture, close to where the donkey, Equinox, was
buried several years before Andalusia was opened to the public.
Flossie will certainly be missed by all of us at Andalusia and by
the many visitors who enjoyed seeing her grazing in her pasture.
